Creating Greener, Safer Streets: Kenson Highways Supports 200 New Trees in the Royal Docks Corridor

At Kenson Highways, we’re committed to delivering infrastructure that not only meets modern transport needs but also contributes positively to the environment and the communities we serve. One of our most exciting recent contributions is to the Royal Docks Corridor (RDC) project, where around 200 new trees have now been planted along Silvertown Way.

This major milestone marks a significant step toward the regeneration of the area — enhancing the local landscape, promoting biodiversity, and supporting cleaner air for residents and visitors alike.

Supporting Sustainable Urban Design

The RDC project, led by Newham Council, is transforming Silvertown Way and North Woolwich Road into more accessible, people-focused spaces. Our work on the ground has supported the introduction of a wide range of improvements, including:

  • Widened pavements and safer crossings
  • Separated cycle lanes
  • Improved access to public transport
  • Greener infrastructure, including the recent large-scale tree planting

These initiatives are designed not only to ease transport flows, but to prioritise sustainability and wellbeing, aligning closely with Newham’s Air Quality Action Plan, which targets cleaner air and better public health through long-term, impactful changes to the borough’s environment.

Community and Civic Engagement

On-site progress was recently celebrated with a tree planting event in Silvertown, attended by Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz, who joined residents and project partners in marking the moment. Her presence reflects the borough’s strong civic leadership in environmental initiatives and the emphasis on community involvement throughout this transformation.

Mayor Fiaz reaffirmed Newham’s commitment to improving green spaces and tackling air pollution — goals that align with our ethos at Kenson Highways: building with purpose, and for the public good.

A Legacy of Impact

The newly planted trees are more than an aesthetic enhancement. They represent a long-term investment in the health and resilience of the area, helping to:

  • Improve local air quality
  • Provide shade and reduce heat in summer months
  • Encourage biodiversity and support urban ecosystems
  • Create a more pleasant and liveable public realm

As the RDC project continues to progress, we’re proud to play a key role in delivering safe, inclusive, and environmentally conscious infrastructure.

Looking Ahead

Kenson Highways will continue to support the delivery of high-quality urban improvement schemes that place community, sustainability, and innovation at the heart of everything we do.
