Transforming Romford Road: Enhancing Connectivity, Safety & Public Realm

Kenson Highways is proud to be delivering the Romford Road Public Realm Scheme on behalf of Newham Council — a major infrastructure investment transforming one of the borough’s most important transport corridors.

Designed to improve urban connectivity, road safety, and accessibility, the multi-million-pound scheme is reshaping Romford Road and the surrounding areas to better support the needs of residents, businesses, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.

Progress Across the Scheme

Significant progress continues to be made across multiple sections of the project.

Works on Section H, between Sixth Avenue and Little Ilford Lane, have now been successfully completed, marking another important milestone in the delivery programme.

Construction activities are also progressing well on Section I, between Little Ilford Lane and Lugg Approach, with completion remaining on programme for this autumn. In parallel, works at Junction 3 – Green Street continue to advance and are currently scheduled for completion in July.

Additional works within Section F North are also underway and due for completion later this autumn.

Delivering Safer and More Sustainable Streets

At the heart of the Romford Road Public Realm Scheme is the reconfiguration of the existing carriageway to create dedicated cycle infrastructure, helping to encourage more sustainable methods of travel while improving safety for all road users.

The redesign carefully balances the requirements of cyclists, pedestrians, public transport, and motorists to deliver a more efficient and accessible route through a highly active urban environment.

Alongside transport improvements, the scheme is also enhancing the visual character of the area through the introduction of new planting beds and trees, creating greener and more welcoming public spaces for the local community.

A Complex Urban Infrastructure Project

Delivering improvements along a busy transport corridor requires detailed planning, coordination, and collaboration. The project encompasses a wide range of civil engineering and public realm works, including:

  • Detailed traffic management and phased construction planning
  • Footway reconstruction and accessibility improvements
  • Installation of new kerb lines and highway features
  • Full carriageway resurfacing
  • Landscaping and environmental enhancements
  • Cycling infrastructure upgrades

These coordinated improvements are helping to futureproof the transport network while minimising disruption throughout the construction process.

Building a Better Future for Newham

The Romford Road Public Realm Scheme represents a significant step forward in creating a safer, greener, and more resilient urban environment within the London Borough of Newham.

Kenson Highways remains committed to delivering high-quality infrastructure that supports sustainable travel, improves local communities, and enhances the public realm for future generations.

We would like to thank our teams, partners, stakeholders, and the local community for their continued support and cooperation as works progress across the scheme.
