Milestone Achievement in Flood Resilience

Kenson Highways is proud to be playing a key role in Redbridge Council’s ambitious flood alleviation programme, helping deliver innovative infrastructure solutions that now provide capacity to store more than 1.6 million litres of water across the borough.

As extreme weather events become more frequent, flooding continues to present one of the most significant challenges facing local communities. The impact on homes, schools, businesses and public infrastructure can be severe, making long-term flood resilience an essential priority for local authorities.

Recognising this growing need, Redbridge Council has invested £1.7 million into flood risk reduction initiatives to date, with a further £11.1 million committed over the next decade to help future-proof the borough against increasing rainfall and climate pressures.

Working in partnership with Redbridge Council and engineering specialists SANDS, Kenson Highways has helped deliver a range of sustainable and engineered flood management solutions designed to reduce surface water risk while enhancing the local environment.

Key elements of the programme include the installation of rain gardens, which naturally capture, store and slowly release rainwater back into the ground, helping to reduce pressure on drainage systems during heavy rainfall. Underground attenuation tanks have also been constructed to temporarily store excess rainwater before it can safely drain away.

In addition, existing lakes and ponds across the borough have been rejuvenated to restore their natural flood management function, while innovative permeable materials such as porous asphalt and HydroRock systems have been incorporated into the infrastructure design. These sustainable solutions allow water to drain efficiently while supporting greener, more environmentally conscious urban development.

This collaborative approach demonstrates how engineering innovation, sustainability and community-focused infrastructure can work together to create safer, more resilient neighbourhoods for the future.

Kenson Highways is proud to support projects that deliver lasting environmental and social benefits, helping build greener, safer and more resilient communities across London.
