At Kenson Highways, sustainability and innovation remain central to the way we operate. As part of our ongoing commitment to reducing environmental impact and exploring smarter ways of working, we are continuing the trial of a 4-wheel electric cargo bike across several London boroughs.
The initiative is already proving to be a valuable addition to our day-to-day operations, supporting teams across Newham, Enfield and Redbridge in a wide range of activities while helping reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency in busy urban environments.
The cargo bike is currently being used to support supervisor travel between sites, yards and project locations, as well as the transportation of materials, tools and equipment to and from active worksites. Its flexibility and manoeuvrability have also made it an effective solution for street furniture installations, including sign erection works, alongside planting and watering operations across public spaces.
In addition to planned works, the cargo bike is supporting traffic management activities and reactive emergency response callouts, enabling teams to move quickly and efficiently through congested areas. It has also played a role in environmental and community-focused initiatives, including lakes and parks clean-up operations, food bank deliveries and health and safety inspections carried out in support of local programmes.
As part of the wider trial, the bike has also been utilised during supplier demonstrations, including collaborative sessions with Zoomo, helping us better understand how sustainable transport solutions can be integrated into long-term highways and infrastructure operations.
The use of electric cargo bikes across multiple boroughs demonstrates how low-emission alternatives can support both operational performance and environmental responsibility. By reducing reliance on traditional vehicles for certain tasks, Kenson Highways is continuing to explore practical ways to lower carbon emissions while maintaining responsive and effective service delivery.
As the trial progresses, we look forward to sharing further insights and identifying additional opportunities to embed sustainable transport solutions into our everyday operations, supporting greener, safer and more resilient communities across London.
