Driving Sustainable Transport: Kenson Highways Explores Cargo Bike Solutions

At Kenson Highways, our commitment to sustainability and innovation continues to grow — not just on the roads we build and maintain, but in how we move around our cities. This week, our team had the pleasure of attending an insightful Cargo Bike Introduction event, hosted by Michael Barratt MBE, where industry professionals and local authorities came together to explore the future of low-carbon, active travel solutions.

Collaborating for Greener Urban Logistics

The event brought together representatives from Transport for London, London Boroughs of Newham and Hackney, Royal Museums Greenwich, and Zoomo, a leader in electric cargo bike solutions. Participants engaged with presentations that covered the history of cargo bikes, TfL’s Cargo Bike Action Plan, and practical guidance on safety, funding, and operational use.

A highlight of the day was learning firsthand how electric cargo bikes — including 2-, 3-, and 4-wheeled models — are being used to reduce emissions, ease congestion, and promote healthier streets. These bikes represent a scalable and cost-effective alternative to traditional delivery vans, especially for last-mile logistics in dense urban environments.

Looking Ahead: Trials and Integration

At Kenson Highways, we’re particularly excited by the potential for cargo bikes to support our own operations. From site visits to materials distribution, cargo bikes offer a flexible solution that aligns with our broader sustainability goals — including reducing carbon emissions and supporting active travel initiatives across the city.

Following the event, our team enjoyed test rides along the Westfield Avenue cycleway in the Olympic Park, a project proudly delivered by Kenson Highways in partnership with our clients and stakeholders. This was an ideal setting to experience the capabilities of different cargo bike models and better understand how they might enhance urban logistics in real-world scenarios.

Next Steps

Our next steps include expanding our cargo bike trial, testing a wider range of models, and evaluating their effectiveness in supporting our delivery and site-based activities. We’re excited to build on this momentum and explore how these innovative transport solutions can become a practical part of our day-to-day operations.

Stay tuned as we continue to push forward with initiatives that support sustainable transport, active travel, and low-carbon logistics — all part of our ongoing commitment to building better, greener infrastructure for the communities we serve.
