Leading by Example: Rainwater Collection and Sustainable Water Use at Kenson Highways

At Kenson Highways, environmental responsibility is embedded in how we plan, deliver, and maintain infrastructure. As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainable working practices — particularly during periods of prolonged heat and reduced rainfall — we are taking proactive steps to reduce reliance on mains water by collecting and reusing rainwater across our operations.

Why Sustainable Water Use Matters

With climate change increasing the frequency of heatwaves and water stress, responsible water management has never been more important. By harvesting and reusing rainwater, we help:

Conserve valuable water resources for essential use Support the health of newly planted trees, shrubs, and landscaped areas along highways and in public spaces Reduce pressure on drainage systems by aligning with Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) principles Maintain rain gardens and biodiversity-friendly green infrastructure that enhance urban environments

These measures play a vital role in improving the resilience of our road networks and public spaces while supporting wider environmental goals.

Our Approach to Rainwater Collection

Kenson Highways has integrated practical, effective water-saving measures into our day-to-day operations. Our approach includes:

Collecting rainwater through a range of catchment and storage systems Making use of natural collection points to capture and store excess rainfall Using harvested rainwater for watering plants, soft landscaping, and green infrastructure installations Supporting the delivery of rain gardens, permeable landscaping, and SuDS features within our project designs

By reusing rainwater wherever possible, we minimise waste while ensuring that newly installed planting and landscaping can thrive — even during dry conditions.

Building Resilient, Sustainable Public Spaces

These simple but impactful practices help us deliver greener, more resilient highways and public realm schemes for the communities we serve. By reducing surface water runoff, supporting biodiversity, and conserving natural resources, we are helping to create public spaces that are better equipped to respond to the challenges of a changing climate.

At Kenson Highways, we are proud to lead by example — embedding sustainability into our operations and continuing to deliver infrastructure that benefits both people and the environment.
